Position Summary

The incumbent will assist the Senior Associate Dean for Research Development in the planning, implementation and evaluation of activities that facilitate research development efforts across the institution. This includes identifying and responding to research funding opportunities; providing and/or coordinating technical assistance to faculty, post-docs,
residents, pre-doctoral students and staff for proposal/project development; assisting in the development, implementation, evaluation and/or revision of policies and procedures relating to operational activities that directly impact research development; establishing cooperative working relationships and planning activities with current external funders and potential funders; and assisting with the development and implementation of seminars, meetings and workshops with research partners and collaborators. This position requires and in depth understanding of project management and service models for supporting multi-disciplinary research and research development efforts.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists senior leadership in the development and implementation of research development goals, objectives, policies and procedures that align with the institutional strategic plan for research.
2. Supports planning, implementation and management of programs and activities related to research development.
3. Assists in the development of proposals for grants, contracts and agreements to support research development efforts of individual faculty and trainees, and those of the institution.
4. Maintains liaison with departments, institutes and centers at MSM to coordinate existing research development activities and resources and/or initiate new activities and acquire additional resources based on need.
5. Develops, monitors and evaluates research development activities effectiveness, investigates trends, and recommends and implements modifications to improve effectiveness.
6. Interfaces with external organizations as appropriate to ensure cooperative efforts with research partners and collaborators, funders and potential funders are enhanced, and available resources are utilized.
7. Assists in the development and formulation of reports for the senior leadership documenting research development outcomes at the individual, unit and institutional levels.
8. Assists in development and formulation of project budgets; prepares budgetary documents and reports; and oversees other budgetary data as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

• Must have strong leadership skills and extensive knowledge of principles and practices of project planning, development, management and evaluation.
• Must be detail-oriented, accurate, analytical and organized.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to write various grants for program funding; make assignments; assemble and organize the component parts of a proposal and write and review sections of the proposal.
• Ability to make optimal use of information technology in the recording, retrieval and reporting of data and information.
• Ability to build and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with faculty, trainees and staff at MSM, using the principles of outstanding customer service.
• Ability initiate and maintain effective working relationships with research funders, research partners and collaborators.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent may be responsible for supervising other research development staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a biomedical science field or public health. Minimum five years of project director experience in multi-disciplinary research service model is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, SharePoint), developing dashboards and use of project management tools.
