Position Summary

Morehouse School of Medicine is offering an opportunity for a highly motivated, energetic and creative fundraising professional to join a team where the energy level is high and hard work in an environment of shared leadership brings the joy of achieving goals that make a notable difference in the quality of life of the community we serve. In short, the MSM is seeking to recruit and retain an experienced and enthusiastic Associate Vice President of Advancement and Development Services (AVP/Senior Operations Officer) who is eager to have a strong personal impact working in a unique entrepreneurial nonprofit environment and is excited about dramatically moving the institution forward using its new strategic plan and increased alumni engagement opportunities. The AVP will be a member of the Sr. Vice President’s Executive Leadership Team, chiefly responsible for the overall management of the day to day operations of the department, working with cross functional team to meet departmental and institutional goals.

Experience in the higher education marketplace and a solid understanding of nonprofit fundraising will serve this candidate well. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills; have a creative approach to fundraising in a challenging, yet nurturing, environment, work closely with the development program managers and colleagues as they meet the needs of a growing institution. The emphasis for the AVP is on developing a comprehensive development program that nurtures the alumni and donor constituencies over time to create value for MSM. The ideal candidate will work to coordinate the activities of Annual Giving, Prospect Research, Stewardship, Alumni Relations, and Planned Giving to build a first rate development program engaging a broad range of constituents.

POSITION SUMMARY

• Leadership and management of the departments of Annual Giving, Donor Development & Research, Stewardship, Alumni & Constituent Engagement, and Alumni Relations to ensure all are working as one cohesive unit to support the functions of OIA.
• Work with SVP and development directors to establish annual goals and metrics around fundraising activity for MSM.
• Outstanding oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
• Strategic and operational thinking, as well as organizational communication abilities are critical.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the best practices within higher education fundraising to support central and constituency-based development needs.
• Direct all fundraising and advancement operations to accomplish fundraising goals and to develop solicitation strategies for donor prospects at all levels.
• Outstanding leadership with strong management and staff development capabilities.
• Develop standard operating procedures for fundraising, stewardship and advancement services.
• A working knowledge of annual giving and direct response.
• Ability to effectively deal with and lead through ambiguity.
• In support of the SVP’s organizational goals and objectives, the AVP will guide the establishment of annual performance goals and metrics around fundraising activity for MSM.
• The ability to embrace constructive feedback as well as provide the same to direct reports
• Responsible for developing and cultivating solicitation strategies for assigned major prospects including goals for the number of contacts, ask amounts and gifts obtained.
• Ensure required Raiser’s Edge reporting by all fundraisers and appropriate employees is fully utilized
• Collaborate with the Sr. Vice President to develop strategic goals and objectives as well as annual operating objectives. Has responsibility for reporting on progress, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually.
• In collaboration with Marketing and Communications, the AVP/Senior Operations Officer will provide input and supervision over design and production of all development fundraising materials including publications, brochures, and web-based, and social media content.
• Develop a staff development programs which will stimulate creative and innovative programs resulting in new levels of achievement for staff with varying levels of experience.
• Work with MSM faculty to develop various means of increasing externally funded faculty research such as disseminating funding opportunities, facilitating grant-seeking workshops and facilitating preparation and submission of faculty research proposals.
• Coordinate with the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs to assist in stewardship and reporting on federal grants.
• Support and respond to other duties and requests.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university is required; 8 + years of related experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong preference for an individual with 10+ years leadership experience in fundraising. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience with best practices in education fundraising to support central and constituency based development needs.

An advance degree from a regionally accredited college or university is preferred.
